I enabled spell checking in the single-line text field manually, in the field's context menu. The same thing happens in automatically checked multi-line text fields.
I used firefox 2.0.0.4 on mac localized to US english. I've just tried it in 2.0.0.6 and there's no difference.

Firefox doesn't usually spellcheck single-line text fields. Do you have some extension installed to do that?
Also, what version are you using and what locale?
